Governors under the aegis of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) paid visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari in Kaduna. They appealed to him not to abandon President Bola Tinubu and APC as the 2027 general elections draw closer.
The meeting, held at former President Buhari's newly reconstructed Kaduna apartment, was attended by top All Progressives Congress (APC) officials. They made a fervent plea for Buhari's support, particularly amid the growing momentum of the opposition coalition. This coalition, led by notable figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former governors Nasir El-Rufai and Peter Obi, poses a significant challenge to the APC's prospects in the 2027 elections.
A source who requested anonymity disclosed, “The meeting of APC governors was basically to plead and beg former President Muhammadu Buhari to support the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027. You know the opposition coalition is gathering momentum, and many former President Buhari’s allies are heading to the coalition to challenge Tinubu’s second-term ambition.”
Addressing journalists after the meeting, Chairman of the APC Governors’ Forum and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma ascribed Buhari as a father in politics.
"We came to pay former President Muhammadu Buhari a courtesy visit. You know former President Muhammadu Buhari is the only former president produced by the APC.
"We came and saw him in good health. We fraternised with him, stayed with him and are ready to return to our various businesses.
“We met with him, and he was pleased with our party. He expressed surprise at our visit. We are happy and thankful to Almighty God because we met him in good health. He is our father in politics. He is well pleased with our party and all of us, his children. He is well pleased with our visit.”
Governor Hope further described the APC as the biggest political party in Africa, which in his belief, "its members would continue to ensure it remained stronger".
Also corroborating his chairman and counterpart, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani lauded former President Muhammadu Buhari for supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC.
“We are here along with other APC governors to visit former President Muhammadu Buhari. We are happy the way former President Buhari is supporting our party and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Mr Sani concluded.
A source close to the governors but preferred to remain anonymous disclosed that the governors at the meeting, while reminding former president Buhari of Tinubu's continued support during his eight year tenure, appealed to him not to abandon President Tinubu or allow the Congress for Progressives Change (CPC) loyalists within the APC to leave the party to form the coalition movement.
Political pundits see their visit as a sign of concern after former Kaduna state governor Nasir El-Rufai revealed he got former President Buhari's blessing before defecting to the SDP. Buhari has since dismissed rumors of his own potential defection.
