Scholz Calls for Unity Amid Crises in New Year’s Address

BERLIN (AP) — Chancellor Olaf Scholz urged Germany’s 84 million citizens to stay united in the face of global challenges, a struggling economy, and the recent tragic attack at a Christmas market in Magdeburg. In his New Year’s message, set to air Tuesday night, Scholz emphasized the importance of solidarity.

"Strength lies in solidarity, and we are a country that stands together," Scholz declared. "Together, we can make 2025 a year of progress."

He acknowledged the shock still gripping the nation after the deadly Christmas market attack, which claimed five lives and injured over 200 in Magdeburg. A Saudi doctor deliberately drove his car into the crowd before being arrested on murder charges. "We are horrified by this senseless act. How could anyone cause such devastation?" Scholz said, reflecting the deep grief shared by many. "After such a tragedy, how do we find the strength to move forward?"

The Chancellor expressed gratitude to those who helped the victims and reminded the public that such attacks and crises should not divide the country. "We are not a nation of division, nor one of indifference," he asserted. "We are a nation of solidarity, and this strength will carry us through difficult times."

With a federal election looming in February, Scholz encouraged citizens to vote, also taking aim at tech mogul Elon Musk, who had recently endorsed the far-right Alternative for Germany party. "The people of Germany decide our future, not the owners of social media platforms," Scholz said firmly.

While acknowledging the country's economic struggles and rising costs, the Chancellor highlighted Germany’s global importance. "We may be just 1% of the world’s population, yet we are the world’s third-largest economy because of our industriousness," he noted.

Scholz closed his address with a message of optimism: "Our solidarity makes us strong, and together, we can face whatever challenges come our way in 2025."
