Photos released by Meloni’s office showed the two leaders
posing together at the entrance of Mar-a-Lago, with a festive Christmas tree
visible in the background. Other images showed them chatting in a reception
room. However, Meloni’s office did not issue any formal statement about the visit and declined to respond to media inquiries for more details.
Reports from US media suggest that the visit included a film
screening and a dinner between Meloni and Trump, both prominent figures in the
global conservative movement. The images of their meeting appeared on the front
pages of all major Italian newspapers on Sunday.

Meloni, leader of Italy's far-right Brothers of Italy party,
is one of several foreign leaders, including Canadian Prime Minister Justin
Trudeau and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who have recently met with
Trump. The meeting comes ahead of Trump’s upcoming inauguration for a second
term, set for January 20.
The surprise visit also comes just before US President Joe
Biden is scheduled to make a four-day trip to Rome, where he is expected to
meet with Meloni and have a separate audience with Pope Francis.
