Nasir El-Rufai, the former Governor of Kaduna State, has
addressed rumors that he is planning to leave the ruling All Progressives
Congress (APC) and join the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of
the 2027 presidential election.
El-Rufai, a key figure in the APC’s campaign that helped elect President Bola Tinubu in 2023, has been at the center of speculation about his political future following a fallout with the President.

This tension
escalated when the National Assembly rejected his nomination for a ministerial
post, fueling ongoing rumors that he might align with an opposition party to
challenge Tinubu in the upcoming elections.
Over the weekend, reports surfaced claiming that El-Rufai
had defected to the PDP in a bid to vie for its presidential ticket. In
response, El-Rufai took to his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), to
dismiss the claims, calling them false and baseless. He urged the public to
ignore the rumors and confirmed that he had taken legal action against those
spreading the misinformation.

“Please disregard the patent lies and rumors about my
political affiliation. I have referred the lead peddlers of the fake news for
further action by my lawyers,” El-Rufai wrote on January 5, 2024.
Additionally, a close associate of El-Rufai described the rumors as the work of mischief-makers, emphasizing that someone of El-Rufai’s stature would not defect to the PDP without making an official announcement.
