White House: Biden to Address Syria Crisis at 1:00 PM - US President Joe Biden is set to address the situation in Syria on Sunday, the White House announced, following a crisis meeting about the sudden overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad by Islamist-led rebels.

The televised remarks, scheduled for 1:00 pm (1800 GMT), will focus on the "latest developments in Syria."

So far, the United States has taken a restrained approach, while world leaders have called for peace, praising Assad’s fall and advocating for a political solution to stabilize the war-torn nation.

Earlier, Biden held a meeting with his national security team to receive an update on the situation in Syria, as reported by National Security Council spokesman Sean Savett on X.

Assad’s reported departure came less than two weeks after the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) launched a swift rebel offensive, breaking long-established frontlines in Syria's civil war.

Early Sunday, HTS announced it had entered Damascus and that Assad had fled, sparking celebrations nationwide and the looting of Assad’s opulent residence.

The US military currently has around 900 troops in Syria and 2,500 in Iraq as part of the international coalition formed in 2014 to combat the Islamic State.

The US has regularly targeted sites in Syria, including those linked to Iranian-backed militias, with Iran being a key ally of Assad’s regime.
